在我的童年时期，正值银元盛行的年代。当时的“银元”在早期上海被称为“银饼”。这些银饼最早由上海富商在咸丰六年（1857年）私家铸造，起源于沙船行业。所谓沙船，是一种巨型木帆船，主要用于北方运盐至上海，南方运黄沙至北方。黄沙与石子、泥土混合后成为三合土，是建筑的重要材料。

这些沙船厂雇佣了大量员工，每月发放工资时，为避免称量碎银引发争议，富商们如王永盛和郁深盛等便自铸银饼，每饼重量为五钱白银。这些银饼最早出现在咸丰五年（1856年），以手工锻造完成。后来，随着墨西哥银元（俗称“墨银”）的大量流入，中国市场逐渐接受了更为精确的机器铸造银元，外国商人来华交易时也普遍使用这种货币。
